Incontinence.
for us you to marry than burn, nor for us to marry than
burn: but in general it is better to marry than burn.
At any rate, if marriage is not made represented as
a sin, abstinence from it is represented as a merit.
From that time Continence came to be reckoned as one
of the chief ingredients in holiness: in short as one
of the chief if not the very chief of those moral masks
which were to distinguish [to his advantage] give a Christian the pre-eminence as Christian
from another man. The greater person he was put it put him to
to in putting preserving the singular qualification,
the more acceptable he was supposed to render himself
in the sight of God.
Under this general anathema, no very explicit distinction
except in favour of marriage seems to have
been made between one species of incontinence and
another. They are mention If damnation is denounced
against persons guilty of uncleanness, it is equally denounced against
fornication fornicators. They are mentioned commonly in the same
breath, and without any instruction that one will be
punished more severely than another.
This habit of thinking, has been & as is universally
known, and or pretty generally lamented been follow'd &
but too closely by the most numerous sect of Christians
to the great torment of individuals, and to the great depopulating creature detriment
of states. If there w ever was a merit in the
mortification of this appetite men have asked why it is there not now:
and it has be is difficult to answer them. If meritorious
in one why is it not in all?
