CLASSIFICATION. False BL. Comm.

however paradoxy, be justly said
it may be said
we may say, however paradoxical it may seem, that the better it serves is calculated for the
kind & quality of knowledge that subsists at present, the more it serves as an
[is calculated] for a means of] to the acquisition of any new; and this on account of the tendency

Of this [viz Blackstone's
communication of that
[the worse it serves [is calculated]
it has, by smoothing
it and polishing down those
roughnesses which formerly
by the uneasiness they created
would detain the attention
& put the upon enquiries
to dispose men to acquiescence
to kill
a Chimera by which they learn they are
to be devoured they know not why.

Bl makes a sacrifice of precision
to perspicuity.

Deprived by the voluminousness and confusion intricacy of the Laws of the power means of the understanding comprehending the of
their obedience, they find an insufferable <add>a eluded by this artificial unsatisfactory arrangement to their efforts to for the reasons for
which it is exacted: they learn to their astonishment and dismay, but they are to smart for offending
against they know not what ideal Being, a quiddity, an abstraction, to which the [tenebrous]
dark industry of bewildered Jurists has given the semblance of [an] existence an entity

by feeding them with easily swallowable palatable
by unsubstantial doctrines
to lull them asleep, & spread the
totem of delusion over
their eyes

+As if it were a distinct and independent<add> self-created power
which might command one thing
which the Law of the State was
silent or commanded another
.

precise enough to be
something to deny

Such is what is called the Law of Nations: as if it were a distinct and coordinate power, exercising
a jurisdiction coordinate with that of the state, containing having precepts of its own which are
not it's precepts sanctions of its own which are not its sanctions directing itself by views of its own which are not its views+

[Nothing contributes so much to] the
tranquility and comfort assurance of the
subject, as the unity is as certain a consequence of the Rule
by which he is to govern himself:
in his his distinctive difficulty & danger (is
[when] that rule is being splitten into
[in any] several.

Such again is the Prerogative: a word which men in this country have been so well
accustomed exercised in regarding<add> treating as synonymous to imposture and oppression, & which would be
productive of so much real mischief, of which to which this Title gives no instruction direction nor so much even
a glance .

for since of things viz: the doing
a thing & the letting it along,
a man can perform but one; the rules rule by which
a man is to himself to that
purpose must ultimately be [reduced
to] one before it can either [permitts
him tranquility] or] afford
him direction. or [in consequence can] permitt him case
of mind.

Such again is Peace another Ideal existence, which different in their behalf from the other, is very
dear & respected, but which from its their latitude & equivocality of which is such as to have
afforded [too easy] room to abuses to lurk [too easily] under its shadow.

RELIGION

If any one chooses the following section should chance
to give offence to any one, he has my
free consent to cut it out & throw
it into the fire unless he rather
chooses to for the sake of
teaching me better for which the I shall be the more
shall have my thanks
obliged to him.

Such again is Religion another of these ideal existences, which could never by<add> any possibility be too enough
respected much <add> prostrately, did aid the abuses which in all times have swarmed under it's a l' <add>flocked to thrust themselves under its wing [run off snatch up
with such avidity] & thrive with such enormity on every grain of [tho' it is offer'd
to it], that it becomes necessary to [] them before that [...] the propensity to offer it becomes more
useful than it is mischievous. — Inasmuch that simply from hearing being told that an
an offence against Religion, a man can never know whether it is
mischievous, indifferent or useful [an general observation that will be scarce be more readily universally admitted readily enough admitted
by Di as well as Laity of them by all pernicious, howsoever they may differ in applying it to particulars.

The common Syllogism in which [so many dangerous fallacies are envelopped] in this
Religion is necessary to a the State, this ordinance Tenet is a part of Religion: therefore
this ordinance Tenet is necessary to a the state.
