Pleasure & pain the
only ends of human
action. Pleasure &
exemption from pain
the only means employable
for the attainment
of those
ends.

Instruments of good
& of evil not two distinct
sorts of instruments
– not employed
the one by the governors
the other by
the governed. But
the instruments
are the same in all
cases which in the
hands of some of the
governed are productive
of preponderant
evil & in the
hands of some of the
governors of preponderant
good.

These instruments are –
1 Physical force –
2 Intimidation immediate or interventional –
3 Allurement
4 Deception

Faculties immediately
acted upon by the use
of the above instruments
– by physical
force the corporal by Intimidation
& Allurement
the mental faculties
viz – the volitional & intellectual
by deception
the intellectual – the ultimate
effect of all is the
influencing the active
faculties.

Deception produces
deceivedness on the part
of the judgment. Deceivedness
has place when the
corruption deduced differs
from the matter of
fact. The defect on the
part of the deceiver is
the exercise of his active
faculties in a manner
different from what
would have been the
case had he entertained
a correct conception
of the matter of
Fact.

Indifferently productive
of good & evil
are – physical force
intimidation & allurement

by a malefactor preponderant
