If we had never had those advantages at all
we should never have had them to regret.
But we have had them — we have lost
them — we regret them — & that is pain.
Two sorts of mischief are therefore consequences
of engagements thus broken —
Loss of Pleasure — & accession of Pain.
What can be more simple than these
considerations, more obvious or more conclusive?
nothing. What else can shew a reason
why it is right that fulfilling & such engagements should
be fulfilled — why it is to be wished for?
Why the fulfilling of them has the approbation
of him who hears of it? why the not
fulfilling them has his disapprobation.
Consult Maintain the Jurists, you have quite another
language — Pleasure and or pain, whether
more in one case than in the other.
they never trouble themselves to enquire —
as if pleasure and pain were no part of man's concern.

There These <add>say thatare promises</add> is a certain Law of nature which obliges
you to perform your promises — you are
bound by it. If you do not perform your
promises, you violate that Law of Nature —
Do you ask me why I disapprove of your
not performing your promises & I We tell you
it is because you violate a Law of Nature
Ask him why you are bound by it? It is
because we say so — all the world says so
you are the most unreasonable people man in
the world if you say you disagree otherwise Ask them
what they mean by your being bound? What
is this same Law of Nature — where it is?
Who made it — Where it is to be seen How you it comes to oblige
you? Why it comes to obliges you — By what means it obliges you ?
All this is more than they were thought about All you can get from them on the subject is a heap of words which they let fly at you such a volly of
words, as it is in vain to find seek a meaning
for, because they have none.
