If he refrains abstains from taking the pleasure
in question, it is on one or other I
suppose, or all together of these 4 accounts.
Either because he thinks he shall displease
the Deity; and thereby incur either here or
hereafter a proportionable quantity of punishment that
Or because he thinks he shall fall under
the punishment of the Law.

Or because he thinks he shall lessen forfeit to a
certain degree the goodwill of his acquaintance, to begin
with his children and his Wife's relations
Or because he thinks he shall forfeit his to a
certain degree the Wife's goodwill of his wife: losing lose to a some
undefinable portion certain degree of the indefinite but numerous
assemblage of little physical pleasures which he
might otherwise have expected from her services:
expose himself to the pain of her being
witness to her to complaints her reproaches, and her
tears.

In short one might venture to put it to any
man of common discernment and common
candour, to say, whether supposing the reflection
in a man of his having done his duty were
supposing it attended with no other consequence good or
bad to him it could give him any pleasure,
and what in such case could be his idea
of his duty.

The pleasure that given him by the experience he
has had of his strength of mind, which is calculated
to assure him of the pleasures fortify quiet him against the apprehension of
the pains he may have to expect resulting as punishment from for yielding
to temptation in any future instances: and to
assure him of the pleasures to accrue to him
as rewards for the resisting it.

P.S. I acknowledge the favour of your kind

Take away all these considerations, and and
what was called in the first place, to abstain would not be his
duty: in the next place, supposing it were I ask what man
is there alive would do it?
Now if it is on this first account that he
abstains: it is from the apprehension of some
pain to be inflicted on him by the Deity
that he abstains: which pain is either a
pain of the body, or some pain which he could have no idea of if he had not had
it from his body. For it is from the body
that men learn what pain is, and obtain
as adequate an idea of it, as any, who
do not know what sort of pleasure that
is fulfilling what one thinks one's duty.
