Two living writers, both in the 1st reputation
in the moral class, will be sufficient for
examples.

Had they said, that caution was to be used in
the applying of it, that it might be dangerous in precipitate & that care unskilful hands should be taken
in calculating by upon this principle, that all
the quantities [of happiness] were taken into
the account, they would have said no more than
what was consistent & as well as true.

These .......... less circumspect than
Archimedes, who as a condition of his shaking the pr before in order as a condition of he pretended to shake
the present globe, system required another to
stand upon, thought to have shaken the
system of utility by forces derived borrow'd from itself:
the consequence is they cling to never faster that System than at
the very time when they think to cast it
from them, & the System remains still unshaken [immoveable
as before]

It is a pleasing observation, because it is at
once a curious and conclusive one, to
see these two respectable writers [each] at the
very time that they would seem to repel
it, that their struggles to throw it off are ineffectual. unawares 2 & unwillingly 1 paying homage
to it's empire.

There are 2 other writers of a very different
stamp from Gortius whose notions upon this
subject I must not suffer to pass mention
More rational but less consistent than that
Dutchman, they combat indeed the authority of
the principle of utility, but what is extraordinary,
with arguments that that have no weight but what they derive their
weight from that very principle. itself

They therefore subject themselves to this dilemma;
that either the arguments they produce
are just, and then the principle [from which
alone they fetch their weight] is just likewise: or
they are false, & then the principle stands unimpeached.
