Why is Sr Charles Grandison out of nature?
because with to such an attachment of to
the reigning superstitions manifests a weakness of mind that as renders a a man
an object of contempt, he joins in on many
instances occasions such a conduct [and receives on
all occasions from the rest of the characters
in the story such applauses] as manifest
a strength of mind that renders a man an
object of admiration.

What is the reasoning that secretly passes
in men's minds upon the observance of such
a character?

Either he is not sincere, in which case he is
a knave, and uses this as a cloke puts on this character to cover
his designs from the weak whose understandings
have been perverted & broken by
the terrors of this Sanction: he is sincere

and is himself one of those weak persons.

Observe that Minister Statesman, so loud in public
assemblies in magnifying the efficacy &
importance of this Sanction, and censuring in his censures
on those who have been accused of weakening
the influence of it: Would he speak of himself
as being governed by it, in preference
to the moral Sanction? even before to those who
on like occasions have used the same language
as himself.

Would he turn one cheeks after the other had
been smitten? would not he rather laugh abstain from
at any one who should do so? would he
fast and abstain from .... meats
with St Paul and the ..... ...ans?
If he refrained from saying to a man that
vexed him thou fool, would it be out
of politeness, or fear of the danger of Hellfire?
The very question cannot be reviewed put
with seriousness.
