Man has being susceptible both of Pain and
Pleasure and Pain ; has two ends or objects , 1st To procure
the 1st: 2d. to avoid keep off the 2d. All his actions tend to one of these or the other. All
that he has , is valuable to him , no otherwise
than as it serves for one of these
purposes or the other.
What he has for these two purposes are either 1st Parts of his body:
or 2d organs of his body: or 2dly things exterior
to , separate from his body.
They are valueable to him
The value they are of to him , [both of them,]
is therefore, either 1st as Instruments of fruition,
to procure pleasure : or 2dly. as Instruments
of defence , to avert pain.
