Purity.
But the same act that is a cause of pleasure,
may also be a cause of pain:
from the pain that goes+ + thus connected with with it, the pleasure
receives as it were an alloy: the
more of this alloy the pleasure receives, the less in the instance in question is
the value of its cause. As The property
thus belonging appertaining to the cause, is in common
speech transferrd to the effect: hence we
come to speak of the purity of a pleasure.

31.

Impure Pleasure Instance
I am hungry: I eat: I feel a pleasure: by
and by afterwards comes an indigestion: I am in pain then feel our pain
my pleasure is impure.

32.

Impure Pain. Instance
I have an indigestion: I am in pain. I take
physic: that for a short time puts me to greater pain: but
after a while it dispells relieves me from the first. To be
relieved from pain is a pleasure. The pain

it gave me was therefore an impure pain.

Impure Pleasure X Impure Pain.
A sensation thus mixt, or to speak more
properly two opposite sensations thus connected,
may be stiled pain or pleasure, according
as it is the pain or the pleasure
to that cause first upon the application of the
cause. instrument, comes first. When the pleasure comes first, let us it is
call it an impure pleasure: when the pain comes
first, it is let it be an impure pain.

29

Sensation antecedent x consequent.
Of two opposite sensations thus connected, that
which coming first are denominates the compound may be called the antecedent:
that which comes last, the consequent.

30.

Purity — measure of.
The Purity of such a compound a causation is
A Sensation thus compounded may be said to
be more or less pure, in the proportion in which the antecedent
is greater than the consequent:

such proportion or ratio is the measure of
it's purity.

33

The Purity of a L. a pleasure in an individual consider'd by himself respects only his own pain & pleasure sensations. The Purity of a Pleasure in a person consider'd as a member of a state respects the sensations of all the other members of the same state.

34

Legislators cannot any more than other man produce neither Pain or
Pleasure, but any otherwise than by the application of some
cause: The causes they employ may be liable
to be impure: to produce pain upon
the ballance, when they mean to produce
pleasure: to produce pleasure upon the
ballance, when they mean to produce pain.
The purity therefore of the pain or pleasure
in question is a circumstance as necessary
to be taken into consideration as any of
the other four: it is an ingredient in
the value of the cause of the pleasure:
the cause and the pleasure are in common
speech treated+ + spoken of as one: it is an ingredient
therefore, we must say, in the value
