& that as there is a state peculiar to Society, so
must there be a another state peculiar to legislation: one a state
that shall differ from any thing else that is
written, not only as a composition in which
precision & plenitude are made a peculiar study attended to with more
than ordinary anxiety will differ from
others in which those qualities are less attended
to, but that at any rate shall differ tho' it were only for the
sake of differing:
standing tall as a mark [evidence] & standing topic of ridicule on the score either of or incapacity
That it is to the last degree inelegant that it diminishes
the people's reverence to the profession, are objections,
which [should be] decisive against it upon any
other subject, [but which] will hardly bear mention upon
this after others so much more grave
