of mistake — They are very commodious in many instances
for curing ambiguity which cannot be cured in any other way
or at least, without great addition verbosity or circumlocution — the
utility of them is so great, that it could were to be be wished some
characters could be devised & adopted in the room of, in written Instruments,
that should appear less equivocally to be adopted
by design and by being more complicated should better display
the diversity of hands in any attempt at Falsification.
The marginal contents are much too ample to serve for Indexes, &
not always quite ample enough to stand in place of the Text — They
are put for a clue to guide the eye and they stand indeed
of such x clue themselves.
