18. Tho I have pruned away the redundancies of the originals wherever I thought could satisfy myself
not affecting the Sense, I would by no means be understood to offer the Stile of these Abridgments as a
Model for the Stile and Method of an improved Legislation: I have on the contrary used the same
anxiety to preserve the flaws & weak places where I thought there were any, as I should to banish
them were the Stile Task of new-modeling them committed by to my Hands.
19.
I hope that anxiety will be found by those who will survey my these labors with a critical Eye to have
been successful: I have maintained it for two reasons — 1st That there may not have to complain of being know their
apprized of their danger, without being apprized of the chance they have of escaping it.
but principally that those whom it may concern by seeing recognizing the Breach may be prompted to
repair it: nor trust to that as adequate and efficacious, which when put to the Trial might
be found deficient & ineffectual

If that which I shut closed, were thereby shut closed in a higher Place, I had should have endevored to shut closes every
door to evasion on the one hand, & oppression on the other: as it is, I thought it better
to leave [or even to throw it] wide open than to spread over the gap aperture a veil of Licentious &
unauthoritative construction, which it would not be in my power to hinder the eye of Interest would could from piercing penetrating through.
