Libels — What it signifies nothing it to what they tend to, unless they tend with probability of effect?
The virtues of the Prince augmented to any degree that shall be assigned, instead
of affording an argument for the reasonableness of punishing these attacks will afford <add>only </add>
presumption of their inefficacy futility & consequently a proof of the inability of occurring to this extreme & perilous In fact
remedy for their extinction. In fact; experience we find they have been inefficacious.
The Arts of invective have been brought to perfection — yet with what effect?
Perhaps I may be told, that with by these Arts, by a small portion of exaggerated
truth & much bold falshood, a much greater if exploded falshood, illustrations & deceiving Magistrates have been robbed
of many of those suffrages which were are their idea. I am sorry for it.
My Heart sympathizes with them. I know (or should I rather say I can
imagine conceive) the feelings of a virtuous mind thus injuriously stated in of it's noblest & best reward.
