Exception absurd — of things i:e: animals of a house
nature as dogs, cats, bears, foxes, monkeys, ferrets & the like + Hawk.93 + Hawk 93 — as if a
Horse were not a thing of as base a nature as any of them if by base
is meant sordid & disagreeable to man: & as if many of those were not more valuable
than many of those animals of which larceny can be committed. As if a Bear
were not of more value than 50 Fowls for each of which according to the Law
the penalty of shooting is Death

Grand in of any which without regarding the value — the punishment is Death by those
respective Statutes

Grand within benefit of Clergy.

If by base is meant "not usually eaten" no more are Horses nor Apes: if, of no
value, it is not true nor ever was; if nasty, a swine is more so. I can see find nothing
here that is of a base nature but the Lawyer's Clients [ & certain Lawyers, who ........

If it's worth stealing, how comes it not to be worth protecting?

There are whole rooms in the British Museum (that Glory of the nature) full of Animals
of a base nature, & those dead ones; or perhaps only parts of dead ones — I mean animal
worth of value while the living is of none, or is the part of it of value, while the whole is of
none: or is the trouble once taken of preparing it after death to give it a value,
while the trouble constantly taken of keeping it alive is to give it none? —
Is a dog that hundreds of persons would give 5 guineas for, or less value than a fowl
which nobody would give 2 shillings for? We should know all this if cases were
to be brought before the Courts — at present we know nothing about the matter.
