Abortion.

Upon a very different footing with the other supposed impediments of Population
stands the offence of procuring Abortion.

In this, on the one hand the temptation is strong & general, very little controuled by any natural
principle; on the other hand, the detection unequivocal, & the prevention easy —

Besides this, it is attended with danger to the Parent. Mother
The temptation It is strong inasmuch as it the critic anticipates not only discovery, but suspicion: It is general, inasmuch, and over and above those whose motive to it are is shame, who are a few, it offers
itself, to those whose motive may be Avarice who are a multitude. For in all Countries
where Children instead of being an occasion to one a diminution of wealth, that is in all
but such as are newly peopled, or such wherein the heat & Climate afford sustenance almost
without labor, a very great majority of the People were it <add>publickly</add> known & permitted, would be ang impelled to it by that motive.
No Woman of herself, could find means to perpetrate it; at least without such present such pain & apparent danger as would be sufficient to deter her. No mischief results of the 2d & 3d orders — none hardly of the first
It's detection is unequivocal, because it requires an apparatus of drugs to be and the ass counsel
up counsel at least if not the assistance of another person whose profession has led her
to an acquaintance with those dangerous secrets.

For the same reason the prevention is easy; that Profession one which in activ one the qualification
for which exacts long a considerable degree of time & expence, is a pledge in the hands of the
community for the good behaviour of those who bear it. [BR][1.]
