It may be objected - "but when (is this advantage
"in the case supposed above for instance) is this advantage? ) supposing suppose
"on the one hand that no such fraud as there
"supposed is practised and yet your adversary
"gets the better of you: suppose on the other hand
"that both frauds are practised, and yet you get
"the better of your adversary after all notwithstanding: On
"these suppositions, far from having the advantage
"in the case in which the consent obtained from
"you was fairly obtained, it is in that case
"that you lose your point and it is in the
"other, in which the consent was not fairly obtained
that you gain it"
The answer is - that it is not the eventual
advantage that remains at the long run that is
the advantage in question,upon the giving you
or not giving you of which the innocence of
you atagonist depends; but that chance of gaining advantage
your point which was the advantage
you had in view at the very time of the consenting.
Now then, that chance which he seemed to give
you, he really did not give you: and therefore
as it is only upon the supposition of his really giving
