Of Excuses Extenuations
of his having heard somebody assert that there is no such
Law. But with regard to acts of which the mischief is
so obvious as these which affect a Man in his person
such ignorance must needs be uncommon.
[(B) Law] That is any profession of the Text of the written Law

the practice of Judges relative to the punishing an act

Ignorance of the Law is not to be presumed with the Law; and this presumption is
the stronger, the more obvious the evil tendency is of
the act prohibited.

Case 1. Where the mis-supposal proceeded upon probable grounds It is an excuse if the party was really persuaded
upon probable grounds of there being such or such a ground of Jus
