Why deference to authority is made a ground
of extenuation?

Reasons

Because the influence of authority is of the
nature of compulsion. See above Quest: 8 & 9.

Quest. XI

Why Provocation is made a ground of extenuation?

Reasons.

1. Because this circumstance detracts from the mischief
of the offence: See Tit. [Proportion &c] Rule: .
from the secondary mischief. When provoked
to a certain degree you may be driven to do
mischief: in that case you may be dangerous.
But in that case only. So long as a man behaves
to you as he ought to do, he has nothing to
fear from you.

2. Because this circumstance detracts from the
depravity of disposition as evidenced by the act.

Question XII

Why even an imaginary provocation is made
a ground of extenuation?

Reasons

1. Because the same reasons apply to an imaginary
one if sincerely imagined as to a real one. The only reason why the
