2. P Many a person whose from the timidity or
weakness of his adversary would think himself
secure against any attack from on the part of such adversary
himself, would put think himself exposed no longer safe when he
came to understand that there were persons
whom of whose superior strength and courage it might be in the power of his adversary
to avail himself in this nefarious
manner. And the danger would appear the
greater in proportion as the adversary were
the better able to tempt men to his purposes
by the largeness of the reward: a circumstance
which would enhance the unavoidable inconveniences
resulting from the unequal distribution
of wealth, and add to the facility which
the rich have of oppressing wreaking oppression
on the poor.

2. Because this circumstance argues an extraordinary
degree of de--pravity in the disposition
of the offender: by manifesting the predominance
which the self-regarding motives maintain in him over
