Why offences of this sort are made punishable
in so severe a manner?

Reasons

1. Because of the uncommon degree of depravity
of disposition which they indicate. See Tit. [Proportion]
It is to be observed the Cases which come up
exactly to that in question here stated must needs be extremely
rare. The punishment will serve rather to make
a shew with, as a lesson of morality, than any
thing else. It is to be observed that the stigma is
the only part of it the punishment that is to be inflicted
at all events.
