C 13. Of Theft or Stealing
being sufferers or even of bye standers. For whether
the person whose property the things are that are
stolen be a sufferer by the fire or not the offender
in general will not know; and the apprehension
of being plundered deters men from coming to
assist.
Punishment Extra-punishment
In this case
the offender shall be scorched scorching with fire.
1. Scorching; till the fat of his the body drop into the fire. See Tit. of Punishments This
at all events:
May be done once or oftner at discretion. As the crime was
inhuman so shall the punishment be terrible.
Through fire came the crime: by fire he shall he tormented the punishment.

Extra punishment
Punishment In this case over and above the ordinary
punishment, the offender shall be drowned recoverably half-drowning
irrecoverably, See Tit. of Punishments 1. Half-drowning. This at all events: once or oftener at
discretion. Through water he sinned came the offended crime; by
water he shall he suffer tormented the punishment.
