Pleasures of Possession A Pleasure of Possession is a pleasure arising from the idea
of the present Possession of something which in this view is
stiled an object of Possession.

Objects of Possession Objects of Possession are either Real or Figurative.

Real Real Objects of Possession are the several sorts of substances
we see and handle.

Figurative Figurative Objects of Possession, are Rights devised from
real ones. Hence to understand them we must begin with
real ones. It is one of the inconveniences of language to
associate the name of an idea that has no architype in nature
with the name of one that has.

Real Objects of Possession are either valuable or not valuable.

Objects of Possession valuable Objects of Possession that are valuable that is Articles
of Wealth are either valuable intrinsically, or valuable by representation. Objects valuable intrinsically are valuable either
1st as Instruments of Pleasure 2dly as remote instruments
of enjoyment 3dly as immediate Instruments of Security 4thly
as remote Instruments of Security.

Instruments of Enjoyment immediate Immediate Instruments of enjoyment are such as have
already seen.

— remote Remote instruments of enjoyment are such Objects not immediate instruments
of enjoyment as serve to the production or preservation of those
that are.

Instruments of Security — immediate An immediate instrument of Security is any thing valuable capable
of serving to avert Pain from the person whose security is the in question.

— remote Remote instruments of Security are such objects not immediate
instruments of Security, as serve to the production or

Objects of Possession valuable by Representation An object valuable by representation is any thing in exchange
for which an object valuable intrinsically can be possessed.
Of this sort is Money. [a]

Notes.

[a] Money, it is to be observed, besides it's representatives, has
an intrinsic value, which was indeed the origin of its representation.
Other things there are, that have no value at all, or next to none
besides that which they have by representation, such are Notes
of Hand, Tickets Deeds, and other corporeal evidences of
Title to things valuable intrinsically.

[b]It may be termed also an instrument of preservation

[c] We might here proceed to distinguish remote instruments
of enjoyment or security into adequate and partial,
and into instruments of the 1st remove 2d remove and so-on.
But what has been said is sufficient for the
present.
