That the customers for law should be (as in proportion to the
degree of national intelligence they unquestionably are) worse served at to
this hour than the customers for any other kind of commodity – and
that even in the best furnished shops, is a fact that may be abundantly
accounted for by either, much by both together, of
two concomitant causes – the power of the manufacturer on one hand, and the relative ignorance
of the customer on the other.

The manufacture of law is a compleat monopoly: a monopoly
the closeness and consequently the oppressiveness of which goes far beyond
what is ordinarily apprehended even by imagination what imagination has ever conceived in regard of other manufactures. No
other manufacturer has the power of forcing the his customers to take the
goods of his own fabrication, and to take them upon his own terms.

No other manufacturer has it in the smallest degree in his
to conceal the badness of his goods, and the frauds used in the
fabrication of them, the extortiousness of the price put upon them by
any jargon of his own making. He may give them any head
names that he pleases: but these goods will no more be bought for
, f coarse for fine, or dull for bright, under these head
names than under the most familiar ones.

He may put what quantity of other people's hair upon his head he pleases
and in what form he pleases – he may edge or trim his clothing
with ermine in what quantity or form he pleases – nonsense will
not be the more readily bad goods will not be the more readily taken
at his hands than good ones, and more than nonsense in praise of
them for sense, folly for wisdom.
