Scotch Reform Evidence To the People

If in comparison of the good of the service of which it is my wish to be an instrument,
personal considerations of any kind, even what is called personal dignity, the
the noblest of all personal considerations, had any value in my eyes weight with me, I
should descend to sollicitation present myself in such sort so far in the character of sollicitation a
sollicitor, as to give reasons why the offer thus made should find acceptance
at your hands: but so long as the means have nothing absolutely
dishonourable bad in them, he who wills the end should reconcile himself to the means.

If the object be really a desirable one, it will be for your
consideration whether from any other quarter on what ground, or at any other point
of time an offer service of great promise can reasonably be expected.
Whether persons men who have from early youth have dedicated their
lives to the study of legislation are not to be found, or in the
event of the failure the rejection of this offer, are likely to be found, in
such abundance as to afford any very ample choice.

Whether there exists any adequate encouragement
Whether a better choice is likely to be had under less encouragement without encouragement.

In the course of nature I can not have many years to live. What
I look to, as the thought that that which would afford of gild the retrospect of the most soothing comfort
to my last moments, is the having to reflect in addition to add to the good
I have endeavoured so long strived to do, the idea of the good that I have done.

The perfidy of little men in great places nipped in the bud the
promised good that one might and long ere by this time would have been
done.
