Scotch Reform Evidence To the People
If amongst the men in whom the conduct of public affairs
and the fate of the country now depends, there should be any
who on that occasion succeeded in depriving the country while
of the service good who of which on that occasion I should have
been the instrument, the same principle in they would
in the ordinary course of things, be far and according to the
constitution of human nature in vulgar minds of all ranks
be still more sollicitous to prevent my rendering myself
on this occasion the instrument of still greater good. How
much more difficult it is for a man to forgive the injury
he has done than the injury he has suffered, is no secret
to him who has any acquaintance with the constitution of
human nature the human mind. I mention it, and thus publickly
that if it be possible there be any such persons the eyes of public eye
may find them out and for itself upon them, to the end
that from any if possible shame may prevent save them
from sacrificing the interest of the public good on the alter of groundless
vengeance.
