To Ld Grenville
Talk to a lawyer of chicane in this term or any other, if it to
his view it be bee too gross to be defended, he looks indignant – Is there
any man of character meaning an Attorney (for the as
matters are arranged, reproach never mounts higher) is there a man of character
that would lend himself to such a business?
Men of character indeed Sir –
In the first place – are there men that are men not of
character. Are there not two classes? one whose business
depends upon the reprobation of probity, another whose
business depends upon the opposite species of repute?
Men principally at least for the use of bonâ fide, the other for for the use of malâ
fide suitors. Are these not Houses of cake for Attornies not
of character evil fame as for females.
In the next place what is there in character that should
prevent these things. Is it for Attorney the Attorney to refuse to his
client those advantages – any of those advantages – which
are held out to him by Judges? Are not Judges men
of character? The Attorneys by whose assistance malâ
fide Defendants to the number of 600 in a year,
should if the confessedly just demands of their respective Plaintiffs – each
of them for a year in the Exchequer Chamber alone, were
they none of them men of character. Ld Kenyon who
made his £1,700 a year by the sale of the delay, was
not he a man of character? The noble Lord and learned
successor of Ld Kenyon, the noble Lord will alone Your Lordship
have the felicity of spending passing so many convivial hours, is not he
a man of character? Would he be the less so, should it turn out,
– (I am sure I know all that it would be pr mean only to put a case)
that he is in possession of drawing still more than Ld Kenyon did from the
same source, would he be the less of a man of character? Would the
satisfaction Your Lordship is deriving from his society be less pure?
