Dear Swift in speaking of English judicature, considers
it as a branch of the Slave-trade, in which the part of the
Negro is borne by the class of Non-Lawyer, the part of the Negro-dower
by the fraternity of Lawyers. The statement allegation of identity does not
appear altogether free from the charge of incorrectness: for since
howsoever in the two cases the effect may be thought to coincide
the cause presents a considerable difference. In the Black
Slave Trade, at least in the management of the cattle when
once put got into the pound; everything that is done is done by
downright pure force. Fraud finds no demand for his assistance:
whereas in the White Slave Trade, force without Fraud
would have found himself continually at a loss, the silly
Whites would neither have them long continued nor fro the first time suffered
themselves to be made slaves, if they had not dupes,
and among the most egregious ones that are upon record
anywhere.
It was in this persuasion that the discerning Dean after
finishing what the Critics pretend to consider is unfinished, his
Directions for Servants, opined projected a School for pupils of a higher
class, and composed Directions for Judges. Regard not, my
Lord as an idle what I am about to whisper to Your Lordship in the
strictest confidence. My Lord, I would no more swear
to have breadth from the sacred font of truth though it were in pursuit of
pleasantry, than the freedom and upholders of the system of an English a Judge of the English school
English judicature would in pursuit of power or money.
