Prelude. IX

By this means the mind [is no more appalled] finds
no more difficulty in the working up of a part by
the from consciousness of the largeness of the remainder,
than the stomach does in the digesting of a
morsel of bread from its having once formed
a part of a large loaf.

Procedure.

As to a system summary of procedure, if no compleat
one is here given, it is not that none was
wanted, nor as it should seem, that none
was attempted. thought of

The Regular being already established, universally
applicable, it is but to refer to it.

But the summary, not having very much establishment,
must be cut out new new wrought for every
occasion. No defects can be supplied from There is no general repository from whence
deficiencies may be supplied.
I flatter myself that even this loose sketch, how important & how numerous soever its imperfections, might

to keep clear, of far the greatest part of those

And every composition is obnoxious to them.

Ob Perspicuit. in omissae x - Precisionem insertoe. The Definitions &c They are left out of the body of the work
for the sake of perspicuity; they are
inserted in a Section apart of their own for the purpose, for
the sake of precision.

Typo insignitoe These definitions would be of little use
unless it were known there are such.
its a momento therefore, the words defined
are constantly distinguished from those around the rest
them by a different Type.

Finis specialis primo extra propositum — irrepsit samen The truth of the matter is, my intention
was no other than to take notice of such
particulars as were relevant in the subject I had chosen to the general design;
to note such defects as arise immediately

Neque omnisio alienus & soley from tautology Wordiness & the want of

to forbear I could not resist the temptation taking the opportunity of
noticing such other supposed defects as lay
in the road tho' not or referable strictly obviously to
either of those two causes. Not that I do not regard
even these this as entirely utterly foreign to the design,
since I cannot imagine that they would have
escaped the compilers any more than they have
escaped me, had they but had a clear prospect
of the whole in speculation with that facility in that state, that to which

Fides ne esto rimis indicalis Proposal relished concerning which I entertain their respective sentiments As to the rest, I would not be he who should not counsel those many who may have
an interest in it to be too forward put their trust in any of
those subterfuges which the necessity of my

Some of I am satisfied would that they <add>would not hold water</add> avail nothing, if
some I am satisfied that they would would not: about others I am in doubt:
but which if any one thought it worth his while to enquire
I would I but early to assure be assured he should never know; nor could I give
any better advice than that of laying it down to himself as one
general
rule that he would consult his interest much better by
observance of whatsoever appeared to the true interest of
of this Law. than by it's violation.
possessing himself of this notion [persuasion] as of a general one.

Judicibus longae manus On The Benches of Judicature was filled with those sits more than one man

Sed nec inde remedium incuriae latoris ) there must be murmurs) neither that not that
they let it pass by them, but that they go
too far to meet it.
Nor yet is this any justification

De litibus primum est ne instruantur It is not enough, tho' it were true that a being
able to view discern in embryo the thoughts of men
should to every litigation a certain it may

It is [indeed] the interest of the commonwealth

strife.- I would say rather, but it is the interest of it still more [so] that there should
not be a beginning. v. I.

deinde, ut ita velita terminent Nor would it be enough were if it were it even true
(& every one must see how far it is from being
so) that the number of those men who offended attempted &
who were punished miscarried would be even the same: it is the
first end wish of a Law, to be observed by them: it
is the 2d only, the to be executed upon them.
