To have followed the dictates of simple understanding common sense and ordinary usage in the description of it
would have been at least highly dangerous if not fatal to the meaning efficacy

To "suffer death by hanging" would indeed to men of ordinary intellects seem to impart that . man was to be
to lose his life & lose it in this way hanged and to lose his life by it: but lawyers know that it means its' meaning is very different - too different & too complex, to
be delineated in under less than many volumes

So shall proposition instances indeed were it to be as established, thus examined, would probably bring the put the profession into no small embarassment: if indeed
it would be more certain, that that would not be his fate, than what else would.

Such of my readers who have been at the pains of unscrambling it, who are familiarized with this subtle <add>mysterious doctrine,</add> know well enough that this is the case.: & it
is to more than cause trouble and enquiries would take up so much time in this place to make it out to explain it to those who have are not. All I can do for them at present is to
refer them to the books mentioned in the margin
I must hasten from a topic subject pregnant with occasions of expense for disputation of equal of disputation & if answered reserve
which if I were ever to take I should never see know when to quit: & which had much better be prefered over umbrage
than not treated with that copiousness & precision which the importance of it deserves.

Suffering death in legal language means no such thing as losing life: there go more cases to that bargain than every body
is aware: of how little sense one should assigned it to count by the number of instances in which it is borne,
which, there is always, so much of substancetestified as is even readin the jury it, or cosult on taking justice of power to bring
it out.

This is one of those subjects on which it is better to say nothing than to say too little:
at on some future time occasion, it may be my fate to say what many will think too much
I cannot however avoid suggesting the it as an question, whether there be any reason to think that
the impulse to shout
which which was enforced in us not requested, was by design.
