For let us suppose a human legislator
to conduct himself upon the same principles in the same manner
as our Author attributes to supposes <add>represents</add> the Creator to act.
Let us suppose him to have published a law
which was to serve as the rule of conduct to his
people: let us suppose, that the principal
person among his People had himself violated this
law: that he had or afterwards secreted it from
the rest, and put it absolutely out of their power
to come at the knowledge of it: — This is surely the
very case which our Author supposes to have
happened to mankind in general: The legislator
still insists upon obedience to the same code
