To be copied. "pledged however unjust or severe." He
is fancying again that the Creator being what he is
having made man men what they is are, might have
commanded them to amuse himself themselves by roasting
or boiling each other; & that all then it would have
been very right to roast or boil each other.
[A plain man would have reasoned otherwise.
He would have said that God having created
man, endowed him with certain sensations,
placed him under certain circumstances,
such & such actions are useful, such & such
actions are hurtful: & therefore the former
are good, or right, & therefore the latter
are good evil, or wrong. therefore that if any given action or number, of actions were at all times & under all circumstances productive of happiness, those actions would be naturally & intrinsically good: or bona or vice versa that if any given action or number of actions were under all circumstances, & at all times productive of misery, those actions might be called intrinsically evil, & that
if the Creator were the one are comm to give a code of Laws
to man, destined to all mankind the one would be commanded &
the other prohibited. — At all events He would have
concluded, that the prohibition would be nature of an action, and the <add>under any
command or prohibition would depend on
the consequence of the consequences of the
action, & it's effect given circumstances would depend on the effects it would produce on the happiness
of mankind: the command & by no means, that the <add>& that the command
or prohibition had fixed the nature of the action of an action, by whatever <add>the divine legislature ought <add>lawgiver
- whether human or divine ought to be most certainly <add>would & by every other Legislator ought to be
regulated by the same consideration. That in short,
