Sect. I. Law in General 10

clock) fairly engrossed first drawn up or else perused and settled by our —
Author: I should be glad to know further whether a clock is one of these —
creatures that have neither the power to think nor to will, because
if it is: I am sorry for it if it disobeys annihilation must be —
it's portion after all: "for its existence depends upon that Obedience"
and God Almighty or the Clockmaker which of the two it may happen
to concern have mercy of its memory: which is all that's left of
it. "This then" continues are our Author's word, our Author: is the general signification
"of Law, a rule of action dictated by some superior being: and in
"those creatures that have neither the power to think nor to will
"such Laws must be invariably obeyed, so long as the creature
"subsists, for it's existence depends upon that obedience."

Animals and Vegetables. Between this last and the sentence quoted next before it, we have
another paragraph giving an account of the "Laws" by which "Animals
and Vegetables" are "governed" [And these are about as intelligible
as the Clockmakers] This we must not loose for [one part of our Author's lessons is nearly as instructive as another] in this metaphysical part of his book it is difficult to say, which of our Author's lessons is more instructive than another

If we further advance from mere inactive matter to vegetable and —
"animal life, we shall find them still governed by Laws: more —
"numerous indeed but equally fixed and invariable. The whole progress
"of plants, from the seed to the root, and from thence to the -
"seed again; — the method of animal nutrition, digestion, secretion
"and all other branches of vital œconomy; — are not left to chance Spurious senses of the word Law.
"or the will of the creature alone, but are performed in a wonderous
"involuntary manner, and guided by unerring rules laid down by
"the great creator".
