SECT. III. Divine Law. (1
The Law of Nature consists of a "certain" + + p. 40
uncertain set of precepts "principles" + + p. 40 "which he" who made dictated 41
it "has enabled human reason to discover, so far
"as they are necessary for the conduct of human
actions." "Reason" to "discover" "self-love" to "prompt" to the discovery. That is The Law of Nature That which we have been last considering, is by turns "The Law of Nature, "The Laws of good "and evil, The Laws of "eternal Justice, Ethics, Natural Law, Immutable Laws of Human Nature." The only It can be from nothing but an undue deference to modern prejudices
The consequence is that they are not
discover'd. They must be discover'd by somthing
else. When thus discover'd at last, they turn
into a different sort of Law. This Law
is the Divine Law, Revealed Law, or to give it all it's titles or Law
of Revelation.
Synonymisms abroad spring up like Mushrooms in the fertile vocabulary hot-bed of
our Author's brain: far, far greater precision,
he has made it a rule it's a rule with him never to call the
same thing twice together by the same name. Poetry is what his Oracles ought to have him deliver'd like those of the ancient sages to have been deliver'd in.
We tread now upon tender ground. Should our
touch upon our Author in a disquisitions prove troublesome to our Author,
should we touch upon him in a manner that
might be unpleasant, he might plead his privilege
of Orthodoxy, and cry out profanation.
Should we him he might
not like the God pay us for it by backing telling
what to know [of ] We
might expect rather to be saluted by him with the name
of Miscreant. into of his which All our might be rubbed his eyes, [& be by] the name of Miscreant [in ]
