In vain would he his admirers interest the public in his fate + + favour
by accusing reproaching the severity of criticism as of being a discouragement
to laborious merit: It is not any opinion effect
that this enquiry is calculated to produce, that
can contribute raise to a persuasion that those who dedicate an honest & ... their pen to the instruction
of the public will meet with less than their due
portion of reward.

It will teach him to look to himself ere in the character of a political instructor he ventures
into the awful presence of the public:
to prepare arm himself with the discernment to discover,

which it is his interest to know, & his province

justice the matter of animadversion on account

wholly without it's share in producing their production them
were it not that, But the disingenuity which disposes a man
to conceal truth from the eyes of others is naturally
and aptly punished by the blindness which
renders her invisible to his own.

I repeat it as a lesson to those who are young in
the pursuit of knowledge: those who from selfish
consideration shut their ears against truth or deny
her with their tongue under the influence of selfish prudence or a culpable timidity are by a just & natural
connection of things punished by with an imbecillity
shall seem that will betray them into errors

One might wish unquestionably for other Legislators
but I know not that one need ever wish be anxious for any
another Judge.

to confess proclaim as to perceive — in the object of their criticism
a man excellently well qualified for a station
an important & exalted of exalted dignity of high trust & dignity in which the discernment of
the crown has placed him.

They would have thought themselves unjust, if in
the same sheets which contained their censure
on the work, had not convey'd to all that should ever read therein,
their well-merited tribute of their respect to the man. they had not joined the public in the well-merited tribute of respect which it pays to the Judge & to the man.

It was neither the apology not the a panegyric nor a Satire that
they the wished meant to give on account either of the
public, the object, or themselves.
