The Author of this comment has no personal
ill will to the author of the commentaries
which are the subject of it:
to whom by whom he has never suffer'd or imagined himself to suffer: who never stood in the way of
his pretensions: to whom he never spoke;
to whom he wishes not, for he has no motive for wishing any injury. To whom
he wishes no loss of any thing that he
values, that is not necessary to the profit
of the public.

The importance of the subject, and the influence
the work Author has had on men's opinions
on it, is such (however it be with the merit
of the work, as such as [well] may justify
and minute and strict examination of
it thus rigorous verbal and minute.

That is not Our Author is now has before now tasted of the cup of contradiction He has felt smarted under the body the scourge of Junius for his imputed duplicity
of which he has been — of Priestly and Furneaux for
his avow'd intolerance: In the pangs agonies of ..... chastisements have not found him invincible: but he has writhed beneathd
the lash, without turning [his fashioning himself

where there is one, or that such a point of
Common Law is established, where all the
world is agreed about it, this sort of discourse

To set a mark of censure or approbation.

throughout incontrovertibly appear, that the extravagancies
I shall have ocasion to hold up to view
are not of my putting them, but of such as I have found not put them.

This scantling, brief in itself, but ample
in the exhibition I have made of it, may well sense the
public as a sample: "Ex pede Herculem": says an ancient Proverb: but if Hercules may is to be known ex pede: much more may he be known ex capite. Who if they find
the system of .... here exposed, to
be rotten in the Core, may not unreasonable

Censor X Expositor. I am speak with respect to the judgment
that is passed (where any is passed) on a
subject, or the particular light in which it is holden
up, where no formal judgment is pronounced
for as to saying that there is such a Statute

If may in judging between us both, they learnt but to speculate
for themselves, I care not with what
rigour they judge me.
If I any thing here said can serve to wean
them from that sheep-like habit, in no class
of men so discernible inveterate as in Lawyers, of which
blindly treading in the footsteps of a
leader.

It will be I shall think it my pleasure, gain if, like as does the experienced Fencing
master, when by laying himself open now
by laying myself open subjecting
and then to the pushes of his Pupils, he
teaches him to discover the secret of his
force. strength.

This is not, as every one knows the first
time our Author has tasted of the public
censure, in return to set in ballance for the large measure
he has of their favour: a favour
liberally extended to the first occupant of a
much-wanted .....
