What then is the province of Legislation?
In what way does it lend it's aid to Happiness?
What is it's aspect to the other Arts?

LEGISLATION. Legislation contributes to Happiness by securing
men in the possession, directing them in
the uses and disposing them to the accumulation

of the instruments of enjoyment, fruits of
all the other arts, as well as of those which lie
too much so neatly at hand as not to stand in need of Arts.
and this it does: And this it does, bringing
men to concur in a conformity to these
purposes by means of specific allottments
of pleasure and pain and pleasure (of pain to those who impede the above purposes and or of pleasure to those who forward them) to accrue to them
in virtue of the will of particular persons
appointed or suffer'd for the purpose.

ETHICS [to others] Social Ethics as it respects a man's conduct to others
contributes to happiness by teaching him
how to demean themselves himself in that use of the
several instruments of enjoyingment, as not
to impede but forward the enjoyments
of those around him, in the instance of such
actions of his as Legislation can reach, as of them
it cannot: And this it does, bringing him
to act in conformity to it's purposes, by pointing
out to him the copious tho' unliquidated allottments
of pain & pleasure likely to accrue to him

ETHICS Solitary Ethics as it respects a man's conduct within to himself
teaches him how to give the sum of his
enjoyments the it's greatest magnitude, by the proportion
betwixt the several enjoyments whereof the instruments
are within his reach: and this it does
by teaching the natural property that each any
species enjoyment expended beyond a certain proportion has to produce pain when tested
beyond a certain proportion, or to impede an
enjoyment of another species: pointing out
also as a source of pleasure pain and pleasure:
the different dispositions of other men towards him consequent on
a provident or improvident proportion. apportionment.

Divinity. Divinity when it contributes to Happiness,
does so by teaching what is done towards the

It is these three kindred Sciences that are
