[c] In this rapid & cursory view of things, many particulars for want of room must necessarily be omitted. One might here observe, for instance that
besides the Happiness which directly results
from the putting of the instruments of enjoyment
to their respective uses which a Happiness that belongs
to the community at large; there is one sort
of Happiness and that of a very transcendent
nature, which is peculiar to the inventors,
as such: another and which comes next to
it, that of the 1st enjoyers — But to insist
on this would lead us from our purpose.

at least by in the celebrated French work
of that name, so entitled written in which
has superseded all the rest — The other, which
is that here touched upon could it have answered
the purpose in other respects; would have had their one peculiar considerable advantage over any other, that
which it served as a basis of attachment to
the several respective articles, it would serve as a
touchstone to indicate their value. The
misfortune is, that in some of them, the
thread of connection would in however
real & indisputable, would depend upon a
thread too tortuous and minute for the
purpose of such a plan: a plan the perfection of which
consists in the rapidity with which it enables
the mind to seize upon the relations between
the parts of it. Nor would it perhaps have been practicable to proceed on this plan, without having recourse to the other for subdivisions. That The thread which leads to our

of this account of Ethics, I represent rather
what it might be made of it than what [it]
has been hitherto. The business employment of [the] a great][er]
part of Moralists is has taken another turn to cry out to us
till they are hoarse to act without interest,
that is without inducement: in consequence
they give us none: They are more ready to feel that a certain such a mode of conduct in one individual is advantageous to this community in such a case, than they are able to tell us how.] or what it is they tell us how we are
to behave, and we are to behave so because
they tell us.
Hence in point of efficacy, a the great advantage which
the precepts of Religion has -ve at least hitherto had over than Morality
The inducement is still more simple & more
conspicuous even than the conduct to be
pursued. One knows perceives better that one is drawn
by a strong force than we know whither.
To make amends for their want of Skill in displaying
the natural inducements that subsist to determine men
to a moral conduct rather than an immoral that is the considerations which shew dependence a man's particular happiness in one point of view has on the care he takes to respect that of his fellow creatures & at the in another on the due selection of the instruments or means of it one, they
call in prematurely & without necessity the assistance
of Revelation.

Other Arts and Sciences take in hand each
a particular & narrow division of human
actions — legislation Jurisprudence takes extends it's
in hand views over every of acts whatever,
these as well as others, by regulating which,
or encouraging or discouraging by means of
it's own providing, it appears that General Happiness
or whatever else it assumes for it's
end is likely to be promoted.
Like injudicious Statesmen they hastily call
in a very respectable indeed, but foreign
strength power to the neglect and weakening determination
of that which is natural and domestic at home, &
at their own command.
[ ] A difference between the 3 commanding Arts
we have mentioned and the others is, that
the former direct the application of the several
instruments of enjoyment as they find them
produced, towards the attainment of the effect without concerning themselves directly
in their production. The latter are solely occupied in
the production of them without troubling themselves
about the application
