Punishment X Crime A Punishment differs from a Crime no otherwise
than in this — viz. that whereas the pain of the
2d is inflicted by a private person in prosecution of
his own purposes, the pain of the 1st is inflicted by to which it is
the Magistrate in prosecution of the purposes of the
community — both are alike evils — equal evils
as far as they produce in every respect if in purity they were equal. The 1st
inflicted no offenses — than in hopes that a small dose of it may
forward a greater of the second.

Punishment X Physic Punishment with respect to it's and, Prevention differs from Physic no otherwise than on
this, viz. 1st that whereas the 2d is applied to the
body, the 1st is applied to the mind. 2dly that whereas
the 2d is applied to the same subject on which
the symptoms of suffering appear, the 1st is applied, like Sir Kenelm's Sympathetic Powder,
to the instrument subject that produced them with respect to it's 2d end — Correction it differs from Physic only in the 1st respect.
