I never met with any instance of a conviction
for the murder killing of a legitimate child. It is always
of bastard children — This seems to indicate
that it is the sense dread of shame & not
an avericious prudence that has been the motive
in all the instances we know — It seems therefore
that the parental feelings are always
stronger than avaricious prudence, but that
the sense of shame is somtimes stronger than
the parental feelings — Yet the opportunities
which a parent has, seemingly to appearance without
any risk of discovery, are so numerous & so
continual, that if to destroy a child in the interval between during in the course of the long period during
birth and the full which it becomes continues chargeable
that if such a practise were at all frequent,
it could not fail being every now & then made
known by instances of it's being punished. at the period when they become most chargeable
When a Parent or In the instances where a Parent or the Parents resolve to are known to
have endeavoured to rid themselves of a child it is not by killing,
but by desertion: and even thus I believe scarce
ever but under circumstances which have indicated
an impossibility their inability to maintain it. Instances
