The Course is to consider this Form was the Ceremony of uttering
certain Sounds, all meaning reference to respect being carefully abstracted; which
Ceremony being supposed that it is it being taken for granted of it that it is necessary to the well-being
of [the order & thence] of the state, to have a salutary influence stands thus
approved.
The fact of this influence is not in any wise to
be doubted of: it is so clear, that it is as not to be not worth making proving out:
accordingly no one thinks of attempts to prove it make it out: all
which is very prudent: because with respect to some many
parts of it, the Ceremonial at least if each every man who had ever complied
with it had a thousand years allotted to do it him for the task,
he would perish before he had advanced a single Inch.
[How] to prove for example the good service that it does is of to the
state for a man who takes Orders for a good Living
to call God to witness while he assures his Lordship of his having
as how a particular invitation to it from the Holy Ghost?
Considering these words as having any meaning belonging to
them nothing can be at once more impious nor more
ridiculous: considering them as mere sound, they are as
harmless as any other sound [[can be] that serves to give relief to him
who utters it.
His Lordship meanwhile To all this his Lordship listens with a grave fury &
perfect satisfaction; more especially if he has happen'd to be a
means with the young man's Father that he might turn -rid
his thoughts from the precarious & dear-bought emoluments of Physic or the Law
