The Petition from the Undergraduates of the University of Cambridge
was presented to the Vice-Chancellor by Charles Crawford
Esqr: praying relief in regard to Subscription to the 39 Articles
of the Church of England, at taking their Batchelor's degree &c

SUBSCRIPTION Noxious to Pupils through Tutors.

Hence that sollicitude, they obey as it were by
instinct, & with which the indolence of human
nature is ready enough to co-operate, to implant
in their pupils that confirmed & steady mediocrity
of intellect which renders men is to render them dead
weights upon every liberal enterprize of
Legislation.

These distractions are not to be as termed
unfree because these limits

& important.
