In the 2nd lecture of the 1st part of the course
we traced the Progress of the Civil law from it's origin
to it's revival in the 12th Century by the
Emperor Lotharius. for the several intermediate
Ages between Justinian & this noble Prince it
experienced a fate very uncommon to such works:
it vanished out of the world almost as soon as
the death of it's parent Justinian, & even lost
it's authority in the very nation for whose use
it was designed. The irruptions of the northern
nations, whereby all Europe devolved into the hands
of these barbarians, made a thorough Change in
