security of their new-acquired dominions.- In their
own Country they had lived in Clans in the manner
of families, but upon this alteration in their
affairs, that patriarchical kind of Government, by
receiving several new Qualifications was converted
into Feudalism. this Constitution tho' it's principal
was liberty, was yet liable to great abuses
& corruptions. at first all the several nations who adopted
it were Free: they were one family, all had
the same rights, & moved under one & the same
Chieftain, who for his valour & prudence, or some other
eminent Qualification, was honoured with the pre-eminence.
