<head>DIVINES Adverse to improvement
without giving into a passion as unavailing as
[it is] unjust against the Wolf or the Fox,
anymore than the sheep or the Dove for obeying the necessity of his nature, to shew exhibit
such a firmness of disposition, as may either awe
from the first foot that them into silence activity which they do not often have so seldom
break throughassumed <add>forto any purpose</add> and so much seldomer to for a
good one, or if they should assume it, to may
render it ineffectual.
For this cause I have thought it necessary to develop
the circumstances causes that concur to give this necessary bias
to persons circumstanced as they are, that men others
may found the conduct recommended not on spleen
or prejudice, but on a calm Judgment founded on
obvious & incontestible considerations, pronounced
"en connoissance de cause."
