SABBATH. Pastimes

Time is nothing but the inveterate error that the best God
way of pleasing God, is to do what is most un-pleasing
or abstain from what is most pleasing to ourselves
that can account for the notion that has obtained
so long that it wears off more & more every day. of the unlawfulness of many Pastimes on the
Sabbath-Day. Not a syllable to countenance
this, is to be met with in the Gospel — The
Law given to the Jews indeed enjoys the abstinence
from the ordinary labor: it appoints that day for a day
of rest. So that if ever there was a point left indifferent
by Religion, it is this.

Even granting the propriety duty <add>is to be in strictness + duty</add> to fill up the whole
day by the exercises of devotion; still no reason it must be
can be shown why allowed that any all employments that
do not come within that description, are upon
a level. No reason can be shown why that duty
is more violated by walking after a ball, than by
walking about without one. Why by assisting at
a moral representation than at the promiscuous
