SABBATH
An act to encourage promote the frequenting of Divine Service
Recitals
1st That the present Statutes are insufficient
2d That they are improper — insomuch as they make that
the point of fear of Human punishments which ought
to be chearful & voluntarily
3d That the spectacle of his Creatures engaged in innocent
amusements behoves to be pleasing to God
4thly That there is nothing against their being engaged in in
Scripture
5th That the allowance of their celebration of them after Service may be a
means of inducing persons to resort thither chearfully; provided
none but such as have been at Church [ from the
beginning to the end] be permitted to be present either as Actors
or Spectators Encouragement of singing
That Archery, Military Exercise Cricket, Trap Ball, Base Ball,
And all Games of Dexterity wherever a Ball is used
Leaping, Pitching the Bar, Running [with some others]
be allowed
That no Games of Chance be allow'd
That voluntary Subscriptions or Gifts of prizes be allowd
but no betting the prizes to be in kind and not in money
That stocks be provided or any other such engine for keeping
an offender in an incommodious attitude as a vestry
shall appoint.
That Umpires be chosen for each Day by the majority
of Parishioners men and Women + + except married women who are not to vote when their Husbands are present. being of the age of 21
That a Justice of Peace being a Layman [if more than one]
to cast Lots] or in default of such an one the Rector or
Vicar, if no Rector or Vicar, the Curate, if no Curate any
other Clergyman, if no Clergyman the Churchwardens [to cast
