Considitur. This further distant from J.B.'s own ideas of perfection
than any other work of his: what he has a right to expect is
that the standard to which it is compared should be not past
progress, not future possible

Whether the interests of genuine morality or those of
practically useful wisdom were considered, it seemed to me that
it would not be easy to find many a more valuable
legacy than that which a man would leave to posterity
who should by a work which on this subject the contents
of which should in maturity bear some proportion to
the advance made in other branches of knowledge in
the interval that has elapsed intervened between the days of the first
of philosophers and the present time.
