History of Fallacies
History of Fallacies
I have numbered the list of Fallacies given by Aristotle.
It may be matter of amusement curiosity not altogether
unaccompanied by use to observe the difference between the
state of at in which this branch of the art and science of Logic at that time may be observed already
and the state at which it stands at present its present state. It may
there be seen as it stood in the nursery: it may here be seen planted out
it is hoped for good. It Another amusement may be though but
of a higher and not quite so easy a nature, may by the
considering of what ulterior improvements the nature of the case
may have rendered it susceptible. I say susceptible: for because
some branches there are of art and science which admitt
of improvement to an indefinite degree by appropriate actions,
it follows not that this is the case of all without distinction exception:
to attempt to draw the a line of separation between the
one and the other belongs not to the present occasion. That
by the present endeavours this branch has not been brought
to the summit one place ultra of perfection, the matter is I am sufficiently sensible:
no-one by himself it might be is conscious be carried
further shd time permitt
In those seats of sc of inanity and indolence that
have for their object the retarding the spread as well as
the progress of useful and art and science — the list of Fallacies
under the name of Fallacies is enclosed in works
under the name of treatises in Logic remains without
or variation as it stood in the eyes of Aristotle
