History of Fallacies

Not that in all these two thousand years additions
to this branch of art and science have been altogether wanting
But such as they are characterized such of them as have
presented themselves to my view they stand characterized by
the following circumstances. 1 They have not been found admittance
into those seats and sources of instruction to to objects of which
they would have been so incontrovertibly congenial well adapted: To the
head and denomination of Logic one of them alone namely
that for which the public is indebted to the lot — Gerard
Hamilton, and this which is of the freshest date: Rhetoric Rhetoric
is the head name given to the branch of art and science to which the entire? work — namely that which
bears the name of Vissius, is referred — But though in
this last matter though earliest existing instance Rhetoric Rhetoric
is the name affixed employed, Logic might of the matter be considered
in a certain point of view have without impropriety
been employed. Logic By Logic taken at large
may be understood the art of applying to best advantage
to the purpose of discourse the faculty of discourse. Of
this all comprehensive art and science Rhetoric may
be considered as constituting a branch. Rhetoric being the
art of making application of that faculty, in so far as
deception produced by misrepresentation is the object in
view./

This is the object pursued without disguise by both
these ingenious men: this is what that antient disguise they in
these several works professed to teach.
