Fallacies
Preface — Hamilton
4
29. Aph. 358. If you can not perplex the argument at
the outset, contrive to change the question by introducing
something that is similar to it, in the progress.
IV Inconsistency countenanced approved.
13. Aph. 212. The principles of debates are so few, that
it seldom happens, but what you may apply against
your adversary in one part of your argument, you are
obliged to apply for yourself in another; to take up
the principles you have disclaimed, and disclaim the
principle you have taken up.
V. Fallacy (the Discrimination-extinguisher's or Logical
High-flier's) recommended.
33. Aph. 259. When the nature of the question distresses, or
your personal situation throws you into personal difficulties,
you should contrive not to say anything positively,
but to talk in general and at large; and it is a great art,
to convey an impression without being tied down to positive
words. Apply this to Earl Grey.
1 Aph. 59. In the wrong, use comprehensive and general,
because they are equivocal expressions; and multiply
divisions and distinctions without end.
